Uterine Fibroids
Uterine Fibroids – Symptoms and Treatments
What are uterine fibroids?
At any given point during their lifetime, up to 50% of all women will experience fibroids in uterus. These are non-cancerous tumors which develop in the uterus for unknown reasons.
Troublesome symptoms can arise from fibroids such as excessive menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure in the lower abdomen, frequent urination urges, constipation, and reduced fertility. Treating fibroids is the only way to alleviate these symptoms, but doctors are often as unclear about the best treatment method as they are about the exact cause of the uterine fibroids.
Fibroids form in the uterus, but the location of them can determine whether the woman will experience an increase in the severity of symptoms. There are several places in the uterus where fibroids are likely to form. Fibroids growing inside the muscles of the walls of the uterus are called intramural fibroids. This type of fibroid might be entirely inside of the muscles surrounding the uterus, or it could grow to a large, bulging size.
If the fibroid bulges into the uterus, it is known as submucosal, and if the bulging is outside the uterus, the fibroid is called subserosal. Another type of fibroid grows at the end of a stalk either inside or outside of the uterus. These are called pedunculated. The location of the fibroid will determine the symptoms encountered by the woman.
Symptoms
Fibroids symptoms usually include heavy bleeding or prolonged periods. Fibroids bulging outside of the uterus (subserosal) might even put pressure on the bladder or rectum, resulting in frequent urination or constipation.
A woman with fibroids will still ovulate without problems, but the presence of them might prevent a woman from becoming pregnant. Fertility problems and fibroids seem to occur frequently together. A woman who notices symptoms of fibroids should discuss the matter with her doctor to rule out other causes of the symptoms. The doctor will likely conduct a pelvic exam and an ultrasound to verify the presence of fibroids in the uterus.
Causes
Though doctors do not know the exact causes of fibroids, there are many factors which may increase the likelihood of their development, and women have little control over these. Genetics seems to play some role in the development of fibroids. Women with mothers or sisters with fibroids are more likely to develop them as well.
Ethnicity plays a role, though it is unclear why. Women with African blood are up to three times more likely to develop fibroids. Additional fibroids in African women appear up to 20 years earlier than they do in Caucasians. African women often show symptoms of fibroids in their 20s, while other races do not usually develop fibroids until after their 30s or 40s.
Early onset of periods before age 10, high blood pressure and alcohol consumption all seem to be risk factors for fibroids of the uterus.
Treatments
Most doctors will not even treat fibroids, opting instead to take a wait-and-see approach. In rare instances, surgery or drugs to stop the ovaries from producing estrogen might be recommended. Both of these pose their own set of serious side effects such as menopause symptoms when using drugs or the inherent risks with surgery.
A doctor might even recommend a total hysterectomy to completely remove the uterus. This is the only permanent elimination method for uterine fibroids used by conventional medicine, but removing the uterus can bring on early menopause and permanently ends the woman’s chances of ever having children.
The end of fibroids does not have to be the end of childbearing years. Part of the goal of getting rid of fibroids is to improve fertility not to eliminate the chances for children through the conventional fibroids treatments.
